Louis-François Lejeune (1775-1848), whose 14 paintings are conserved by the Palace of Versailles reveal an original painter, and a unique nineteenth century figure. Indeed, he conducted several careers in his lifetime that encompassed the arts, the military and politics.From the siege of Charleroi in 1794 until the Battle of Borodino, his works are primarily historical documents tracing his involvement in the military. The artist is the subject of an exhibition the Palace of Versailles in 2012.The exhibition aims to show how a painting is developed from the history of military observation, topographic records and fragmentary compositions. All forms of reporting are addressed to analyse the place of historical truth in the spectacle of war.
